Friends and family always told Gail Brookover she made delicious pies, so when she gave birth to her daughter and her husband lost his job, she decided to turn her talent into a living. That was 21 years ago, and in the years since her Blackbird Baked Goods Company has been turning out fruity creations for the Weston Farmer's Market.
In the beginning, the Georgetown mom also sold fresh-cut flowers from the garden at her home -- until she ran out of flowers. "I never planned on selling them at the market," she said.
Brookover says being part of the market has helped her meet people she might not have otherwise have met or been close to. "I like being a part of the community," she said.
Her best-selling pies include tart cherry, wild blueberry, peach with raspberry, apple crumb and a "Jumbleberry pie" brimming with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. Her apple dumplings are always a hit and sold out soon after the market began last Saturday.
She sold pies every Saturday for 11 years before taking a hiatus to launch the Georgetown Farmers' Market. Now Brookover spends her Saturday mornings impressing Westonites with her baking skills and her Sundays doing the same in Georgetown. She also provides pies to area restaurants and recently started selling them at the village market in Wilton.
