Pelham Summertime Street Fair Will Be Largest Ever

The streets of Pelham will buzz Saturday with the sounds of hundreds of vendors and customers at the annual Pelham Summerfest Street Fair.

Fifth Avenue will close from Lincoln Avenue to First Street because of the event.

David Katz, executive chef at the Depot Market and vice president of the Pelham Chamber of Commerce, said that for the first time the street fair completely sold out and has no room for more vendors.

PJ's Promotions, a company that organizes street fairs, played a role in that success.

"This is our first year ever using a company to help us with it," Katz said. "They're going to do a bang-zoom job."

Approximately 150 vendors plus local merchants will set up stands on the street tomorrow for the fair, which begins at 10 a.m. Customers will be able to purchase various items from crafts to food to toys and gifts. Funtime Amusements will also set up rides including the carousel.

Katz, who contacted PJ's Promotions and is largely responsible for organizing the fair, has worked at Depot Market since 2001. Several years ago, he attended a Chamber of Commerce meeting and was not satisfied.

"It was really weak," Katz said. "It had no structure or discipline."

Rather than remain idle, Katz joined the board and the chamber elected him vice president two years ago.

Funds raised from Saturday's fair will be split between PJ's Promotions and the Pelham Chamber of Commerce. Katz said the latter will use the money for holiday items, such as Christmas wreaths, as well as a college scholarship that the chamber gives each year to a high school student who wants to become an entrepreneur.
