Pelham Reacts to Casey Anthony Sentencing

PELHAM, N.Y. – Some Pelham residents said Thursday that they sympathized with those involved in the Casey Anthony murder trial - including the jurors who had to make a difficult decision - while others said they believe the justice system worked the way it was supposed to.

Lola's Tea House owner Leslie Allicks said she felt badly for all parties involved in the trial, including Anthony. Allicks knew the jury had to act according to the legal system and not from an emotional perspective, but she said the jurors probably had a different emotional reaction.

"I'd bet that every juror in their heart of hearts knows she's guilty of something," Allicks said. "Every jury has to live with its decision."

Judge Belvin Perry sentenced Anthony to four concurrent one-year sentences Thursday. Anthony will be released from jail Wednesday because of the credit she earned for the approximately three years she served in prison and good behavior.

Pelham resident Faith Florer said she did not follow the trial too closely, though she felt the jury made the right decision.

"The jury reached a fair verdict because, as far as I could tell, no one established clearly the cause of death," Florer said. "The jury did the right thing."

Florer said the verdict and sentencing point to a larger problem in the legal system.

"I think that it's problematic that there are no consequences for parents who don't report their children missing," Florer said. "The law has to address it."
