PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. Local Boy Scout Steven Koniuk was commended by Pelham Manor Mayor Jim O'Connor for earning the Eagle Scout Award, the organization's highest honor.
OConnor also passed a proclamation naming a day in Koniuk's honor.
Koniuk received the Eagle Scout award after volunteering for more than 100 hours at the Willow Towers Assisted Living facility in New Rochelle, OConnor said during Monday nights Board of Trustees meeting. He coordinated a music festival for the senior citizens in addition to repainting and reorganizing several rooms in the facility.
The board unanimously approved a proclamation that marks May 18 as Steven J. Koniuk Day for his years of service to the community through the Boy Scouts.
The mayor also presented a resolution on a Wolfs Lane home purchased by the Pelham Jewish Center for its rabbi. It is designated as a parsonage for the rabbi, but OConnor said it missed by some number of days the timing for having that parcel exempt from the tax roll as its entitled.
A law was proposed by New York State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, D-Scarsdale, to remedy the situation. The state does not have to have the consent of Pelham Manor to do so, OConnor said.
However, Paulins office would prefer to pass the law with the consent of the village. The mayor and board of trustees gave unanimous consent for adding the house to the tax-exempt list because OConnor said it is the obvious right thing to do.
