PELHAM, N.Y. The almost 28-year-old DeCiccos Food Market in Pelham is undergoing major interior renovations in order to upgrade for the customers, according to DeCiccos store manager, Angelo Lucareli.
The new various upgrades to the store that opened in April 1984 include a tiled floor, dark copper shelves, an expanded seafood department, improved registers and the relocation of the bakery to the front of the store, in addition to other restorations.
The renovations will total roughly $500,000 to $600,000, according to DeCiccos founder, John DeCicco Sr. and his son John DeCicco Jr. The two said that the planning process for the changes took about three months.
A majority of DeCiccos customers have not had a problem with the renovations, according to Lucareli, who started working at the store at age 16 cleaning in the meat department when it opened.
We got positive reaction, he said. Id say about 95, 98 percent are positive feedback. I think when they see it, they see were doing it for them. They see were making an effort to upgrade the store.
The noticeable changes right now during the intense renovation process are the new shelves and tiled floor, which is currently in progress of being placed.
The floor was not even, said DeCicco Sr. It was wooden floor and there were parts that gave. So, now we decide to do concrete.
The old off-white beige shelves, which were more than 20 years old, have been replaced by dark copper shelves because those are more updated, Lucareli said. The major renovations involving the floor and shelves, plus updates to the meat, seafood and cheese departments will take about a month, he said.
The DeCiccos founder, his son and Lucareli said they are glad the store is going through the changes.
Upgrade the whole place, said DeCicco Sr. We want to be ahead of the curve basically with all the newest products and newest equipment.
