Pelham Completes Annual Hydrant Flushing

PELHAM, N.Y. - Village Administrator Robert Yamuder updated the people of Pelham about the village's annual hydrant flushing program at Tuesday night's board meeting. The flushing began on May 31 and took only five days insead of the planned seven.

"The hydrant flushing was a success," Yamuder said Tuesday night. "They are 100% in working order."

The flushing occurred between the hours of 10:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m., according to a notice from the Village of Pelham. The affected zone included the area between the Hutchinson River Parkway, Colonial Avenue, Ancon Avenue and First Street just south of the Pelham Metro-North Railroad Station.

The village began the flushing in the west in the Wolfs Lane area and gradually moved east towards New Rochelle throughout the week. The process ended on Ancon Avenue.

Residents in the affected areas may have noticed water discoloration as the program moved through their particular neighborhood. Silt and sediment dislodged by the flushing caused the odd color, which was temporary and not dangerous, according to the notice. People were able to run the water for a short time to clear out any lingering debris.

The notice advised that residents should not have done their laundry while their water was discolored.

The Village of Pelham executed its annual hydrant flushing in accordance with water quality mandates from the New York State Department of Health.
