Peekskill's First Hebrew Opens New Playground

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- First Hebrew Congregation’s preschool celebrated the opening of its new playground with a ribbon-cutting Tuesday morning. The new playground meets state safety standards and features a new jungle gym, benches, trash cans and a soft rubberized floor to protect young students.

New preschool Director Lori Micucci said the establishment was still paying for the new playground, but had to build it in order to meet state requirements.

"We are still fundraising for this wonderful playground because we did not have enough money for it so the temple was generous enough to donate the playground and, as we continue to fundraise this year, we'll put back funds into the fundraising account," Micucci said.

Micucci and Assistant Director Dawn Gianatiempo helped cut the ribbon with a giant pair of scissors while their young students cheered them on. Micucci said the playground was planned in collaboration with parents, teachers and playground designers. It was installed last month but the ribbon cutting was delayed due to the weather, she said.

The women said enrollment at the school, which has been open for more than 30 years, continues to be high as the school has more than 100 students this school year.

"Every day, watching these children and their smiling faces, is what makes this playground well worth it," Micucci said.
