PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- The Telly Awards have named city videographer Mike Miner and his company, MJM Television and Video Productions, among bronze winners in their 33rd annual Telly Awards for their Metro Eats program.
Metro Eats is a regional cable television show that was aired in the tri-state area on regional cable stations as well as on the Internet. The show featured sports talk and popular food destinations in the tri-state area. The winning segment was produced at Lombardis Pizzeria in New York City, the oldest pizzeria in America, and was co-produced with producer and host Eugene Golda.
"For that segment we had Barry Rohrssen and Fred Hill, two college (basketball) coaches. Food appeals to everybody and sports appeals to mostly everybody," Miner said. "The owner allowed us to come in and do a segment there, and they get tourists from all over the world."
The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions and online commercials, video and films.
Miner said he was proud to receive such a prestigious award. A judging panel of over 500 industry professionals judged the competition and only 25 percent of entries are chosen for the Bronze Telly, he said.
Miner, a Peekskill native whose company is based in the city, started his company in 1988 soon after he graduated from Peekskill High School. He worked for both WPIX and Cablevision for periods of time as well before starting work at MSG in 1994.
"The Rangers and the Knicks were both in the finals and the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, so it was a good year to start there," Miner said. "But I've always kept an office in Peekskill."
In 1999 he started producing video segments for the city's cable access channel, and today is responsible for all broadcasting on the channel, including recording city meetings. Miner said he was proud of the amount of content he manages to produce for the channel given the fact that he does the majority of work by himself.
"A lot of people don't understand that this is a one-man operation - it's pretty much just me," Miner said.
