PEEKSKILL This summer, the Peekskill City School District is asking students to read a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction, and write daily to express their ideas and share their thinking about their summer experiences.
As part of the New York State English Language Arts Standards, the New York State Education Department recommends that students read at least 25 books from different types of literature and publish four to six forms of writing each year, said Peekskill Superintendent Larry Licopoli. Therefore, we are issuing a summer challenge and writing challenge to students in the Peekskill City School District from pre-kindergarten through grade 8.
The Field Library on Nelson Avenue is prepared to assist students and their parents in beginning summer reading and writing adventures. The district is encouraging whole families to take on the challenge and make reading and writing a daily habit. This years Summer Reading Challenge theme is, One World, Many Stories.
To meet the challenge, each student must meet their schools expectations. Each student must return the required evidence of their reading and writing work to their new teacher by Sept. 9. Students can also expect some surprises along the way. Every student successfully meeting the challenge will be invited to a recognition ceremony at the school within the first two weeks of October. The school will notify parents of the specific date for the ceremony.
