Hundreds of area residents turned out Saturday morning for the first annual 5K Run/Walk for Heroes, sponsored by the Peekskill American Legion Post 274.Participants met at the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 21 building on McKinley Avenue to register, stretch and socialize before the 10 a.m. starting gun.The course took runners and walkers around Louisa Street, Welcher Avenue other roads on the western part of the city before finishing back on McKinley at the American Legion post for a free barbecue.All proceeds raised will go towards Operation Comfort Wounded Warrior, an American Legion program that provides items such as video games and calling cards to injured servicemen being treated overseas.Peekskill American Legion Vice Commander Brendon Fitzgerald said the event likely raised over $4,000 for the program and was executed well.It was a good turnout, Fitzgerald said. We had over a hundred people. There was great involvement from the community. The Peekskill Police were amazing, everything was safe and it was a good time.Many who took part in the event came from military families, such as Peekskill resident Patti Smith who walked the course with her dog Ginger.My dads a Korean war veteran, so were here for him, Smith said.
