Peekskill Honors Resident Dorothy Leslie for Years of Service

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Members of the Common Council took time out of their meeting Monday night to honor a city resident for her years of service to the city.

Dorothy "Dot" Leslie received a proclamation from the city on her 90th birthday from deputy mayor Don Bennett making the day Dorothy Leslie Day in Peekskill.

"Dot Leslie has been an active member of the Peekskill Community for over 50 years and she continues in her efforts to beautify the city. And since 1957, Dot has been a member of the local garden club where she held many offices, including president," Bennett said.

Bennett said Leslie was also part of a citizen group that played an important part in the redevelopment of the city's waterfront into what is now Riverfront Green Park. She is currently a member of the conservation advisory council and a former member of the parks advisory board, he added.

Leslie said she was given many responsibilities over the years, some of which she didn't always want but learned to enjoy them as she went along.

"I was brought up to believe that you had to leave the world a better place, if you could, just because you were here," Leslie said.

Leslie also praised the Peekskill Garden Club for its work.

"A garden club is a tremendous asset to any city, particularly Peekskill, and I feel this honor is partly an honor for the Peekskill Garden Club"

The council took a brief recess to honor Leslie with refreshments in the downstairs meeting room.
