Peekskill Dropping Speed Limits on Most City Roads

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Speed limits will be dropping in the next few weeks as new road signs will be going up across the city.

The Common Council voted Monday night to approve new speed limits on city controlled roads. The majority of roads in the city will now have a 25 miles per hour speed limit, with some roads that are in school zones or other pedestrian-heavy areas being lowered  to 20 or even 15 miles per hour.

"The speed limits will take effect as soon as the new signs are posted," said acting City Manager Brian Havranek after the new limits were approved by the council.

Exceptions to the new 25 miles per hour limit are listed below:

  • Smith Street: 20 from South Street to Hudson Avenue
  • Longview Avenue: 20 from Boulevard to Riverview
  • Main Street: 30 from the city line to the city line (within city limits)
  • Washington Street: 30 on the entire length except where otherwise indicated
  • Crompond Road: 30 from the city line to South Broad Street
  • North Division Street: 30 from Main Street to the city line
  • John Walsh Boulevard: 30 from Louisa Street to the city line
  • Albany Post Road: 30 from Welcher Avenue to the city line
  • Highland Avenue: 30 from Orchard Street to the city line

County controlled roads such as Main Street, Louisa Street and Washington Street will continue to have their current speed limits, which are as high as 30 miles per hour.

"We don't have jurisdiction over those roads," Havranek said.
