A top priority of the Democrats strategic vision for Peekskill as a regional destination will be to expand businesses that provide recreation, shopping, entertainment and dining for young families, teens and children. Over the last four years, Peekskills burgeoning arts and music scene, restaurants and night life have helped reclaim Peekskills reputation as a regional destination, attracting residents throughout the Hudson Valley. Foster and her running mates intend to build on this success, and leverage Peekskills growing youth population by targeting recreation-based businesses, retailers and restaurants that cater to families with young children and teens to help grow the city.
This will not only enhance the quality of life for our residents, but increase job opportunities for young and old alike. We intend to use these assets to enhance Peekskills economic base and continue growing the Citys reputation as a regional destination.
Over the last four years local entrepreneurs have established businesses seeking to meet Peekskills new demand for family-oriented retail and dining. The BeanRunner Café offers inexpensive, familyfriendly meals and a playroom for smaller children; Nellies Café offers teen-friendly food, karaoke and gathering spaces. The newly opened Orange Splot Art Spot offers workshops, events and an art lab for youngsters and seniors. These businesses complement more established Peekskill youth destinations like Treat Station on South Division Street.
Mayor Foster and the Common Council recently approved a special permit to allow the opening of 2nd Nature Skate Park on Highland Avenue that provides local skateboarders with a safe and exciting indoor skateboard park along with a retail shop where they can buy skating equipment and clothing.
This Administration has rehabilitated existing playgrounds and worked to expand the Citys recreational programs through the Parks and Recreation Department. The unveiling of a rehabilitated Depew playground last summer follows on the heels of the installation of a new playground at Lepore Park last year, the Riverfront Green three years ago and at Franklin Park four years ago. Peekskill has also seen the proliferation of new dance and martial studios and fencing classes.
With over 28% of all households in Peekskill with children under the age of 18, the Democrats see this untapped market as another spoke in the wheel of economic development and job creation.
