PEEKSKILL Peekskill Middle School and its principal, Dr. David Fine, are among five finalists for the annual Teaching Matters Elizabeth Rohatyn prize.
Voting for the five finalists closed on Friday, June 17th. There were thousands of votes cast on Facebook and on a website made available on the Elizabeth Rohatyn Prize site. The Rohatyn Prize for School Innovation goes to a principal whose leadership results in an academically rigorous and technologically innovative learning environment.
The winner of the Rohatyn Prize will receive a one-time award of $15,000 to support, sustain or further an innovative school learning environment, program or practice that has the potential to be replicated by other schools. Peekskill Middle School was recognized for its implementation of a wide range of 21st century strategies to improve student achievement in a highly challenging school, as shown in a video made by the school and its students earlier this year.
Peekskill joins Academy Street Elementary in Bayport (Long Island), Bell Academy in Queens, Chester Park in Queens and West Side Collaborative in Manhattan as finalists. The selection committee will now deliberate to select the recipient of the prize. A formal announcement of the winner will be made on July 11 at the Teaching Matters' Fourth Annual Forum for Principals
