Emerson is one of many municipalities in the Pascack Valley that in 2007 banded together for a multi-million dollar contract that's allowed them to jointly bid on road work.
"The best prices for asphalt can be obtained as the municipalities that participate all purchase under the same contract," Mayor Lou Lamatina told Daily Voice.
"Our Borough Engineer works in conjunction with our DPW superintendent to identify the roads [that] are the worst in town," Lamatina said. "The council then votes each spring to determine what roads can be done in that given year."
Roads that are not completed in one year are carried over to the following year.
The borough this year will be paving a large portion of Linwood Avenue and Main Street using a grant from the state Department of Transportation, Lamatina said.
Kinderkamack Road will be paved and improved in the first quarter of 2016, beginning with pole replacements necessary for its widening this week.
"The poles will be relocated from the west side to the east side of Kinderkamack Road to allow for the widening," Lamatina said.
The Kinderkamack Road improvements are based upon a shared services agreement with Bergen County.
Lamatina urged drivers to plan their trips accordingly.
