Pavia Sets Priorities for City

Economic growth, infrastructure development, public safety and environmental remediation all are priorities for the current administration, Mayor Michael A. Pavia said in his State of the City Address before the Board of Representatives Tuesday evening. When asked if he had to select one top project, however, he chose Stamford Gives Back–an initiative that happens to be spearheaded by his wife, Maureen.

"It's all about arts and multicultural events, about giving back to the community," said Pavia after his address. During the speech, he stressed the city's efforts to maintain and improve Stamford's draw as "an attractive relocation place," even as the economy continues to sag.

"This is the worst recession we've seen in 50 years. It's actually now referred to as the Great Recession," said Pavia, adding that two years ago the city's unemployment rate was half of what it is today. Resolving long-standing issues and dissention, such as the Scofieldtown contamination and Fire Department conflict, will help strengthen Stamford, said Pavia. "Doing nothing is certainly not an option," he said.

Pavia lauded efforts of emergency, public works and law enforcement personnel, and introduced several city officials sitting in the audience.

Regarding economic development, Pavia predicted Stamford Hospital's reconstruction would result in the city becoming "a medical destination location." He also mentioned the Harbor Point, Gateway and St. Andrews projects as revenue-generating benefits. The latter, he said, "is an example of the kind of goal that I have and wish to continue, a 24-7 downtown Stamford with additional housing units."

He also emphasized the importance of volunteerism. "Individual volunteers are critical to making it happen in the city of Stamford," said Pavia. In addition to the his wife's nonprofit Stamford Gives Back Association, the mayor mentioned a new Governance Task Force as ways volunteers can help strengthen the city.
