Koterba's sister, Raina, announced his death in a Facebook post on Saturday, Aug. 1.

"As many of you know, my brother left his physical body on July 30. To say that my family is heartbroken is an understatement," she wrote.

"Frank had a presence that could fill any room. He treated everyone with respect. He took the time to truly know people. He loved his family fiercely. He gave selflessly. He stood up for what he believed in. He quietly and no so quietly helped countless others. His impact reached far beyond what many of us will ever fully realize and he will be deeply missed."

Meanwhile, the Education Association of Passaic honored Koterba, its president, as "A LEADER. A MENTOR. A FRIEND."

"Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to a remarkable leader, colleague, and friend whose dedication, strength, and unwavering commitment to our school and to the people he served made a lasting impact on so many lives."

The statement was signed on behalf of Koterba's wife, Jessica; his son, Frankie; his bonus children, Jaslene and Pookie; his parents, Cathy, Francis and Sandra; and the DelaCruz and Koterba families.

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora shared a statement from Koterba's family.

The family will hold a private funeral before inviting the community to celebrate his life at a later date. The cause of death was not made public.
