The collapse happened at a seven-level parking garage being built to expand employee parking near South 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue in Philadelphia.
One person was pulled from the rubble and taken to an area hospital, where they later died, officials said. Two other workers remain unaccounted for as rescue efforts continue.
Emergency crews initially responded just after 2:20 p.m., working to access the structure and locate trapped workers.
Officials have expressed concern that the remaining structure could fail, prompting closures in the surrounding area as crews bring in heavy equipment to remove debris and stabilize the site.
The cause of the collapse has not been determined.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is leading the investigation, with personnel already on scene conducting interviews and reviewing construction operations. Work at the site has been halted during the investigation.
“The safety of the construction workers is our top priority,” Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia officials said in a statement. “We are working closely with the City of Philadelphia and our construction partners and will share additional information as it becomes available.”
