The mentoring program matches children and teenagers with trained adult mentors. It is a two-year commitment, and the mentor serves an important role in the child’s life. Most of these children have suffered abuse and abandonment, and need a positive adult role model and supportive friend they can trust.
Research demonstrates that the presence of a stable and positive role model in the life of a child is an essential element for positive and successful youth development. The 2013 study, “The Role of Risk: Mentoring Experiences and Outcomes for Youth with Varying Risk Profiles,” found that mentored youth have better school attendance; a better chance of going on to higher education; and better attitudes toward school.
Training is available beginning Monday, Jan. 4 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. through Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 at Children’s Aid and Family Services, located at 22-08 Route 208 in Fair Lawn.
