NORWALK, Conn. The General Assembly's Reapportionment Committee will hold its first public hearing June 30 at 7 p.m. at City Hall, located at 125 East Ave.
The committee is seeking comments from the public before it begins to redraw Congressional, state Senate and state House district boundaries. If members of the public wish to provide written testimony, they are encouraged to bring 10 copies of their testimony, although it is not required.
The Reapportionment Committee is required by federal and state laws to redraw district boundaries every 10 years. Federal law requires districts to have about equal populations so that everyone's vote has equal importance ("One person, one vote"). The districts must be consistent with federal and state constitutional standards.
The 2011 committee members are: Senate President Pro Tempore Donald Williams, co-chair, D-Brooklyn; House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero, co-chair, R-Norwalk; Senator Majority Leader Martin Looney, D-New Haven; Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, R-Fairfield; Sen. Leonard Fasano, R-North Haven; House Speaker Christopher Donovan, D-Meriden; Rep. Sandy Nafis, D-Newington; and Rep. Arthur O'Neill, R-Southbury.
