Paramus officers responded to the crash at approximately 1:20 p.m. near Sears Drive, according to Police Chief Robert Guidetti.
The truck, which was loaded with dirt, overturned in the roadway and is currently blocking all lanes of traffic, authorities said. Route 17 northbound has been closed at Midland Avenue, with traffic being diverted as emergency crews respond to the scene, police said.
The driver told officers he was traveling in the center lane when he was cut off by another vehicle exiting Sears Drive. In an attempt to avoid a crash, he swerved, causing the truck to overturn, according to police. The driver is being evaluated for minor injuries, authorities said.
The driver of the truck was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening head wound, Boyd A. Loving reports.
The roadway had reopened in time for the evening rush.
The Bergen County Traffic Safety Unit and the New Jersey Department of Transportation are assisting at the scene and working to address roadway conditions, police said. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while crews work to clear the roadway.
