OSSINING, N.Y. At 91, Ossining resident Nunzio Antonecchia said it takes a lot to surprise him. But as 15-year-old Ossining High School student Alice Burla played the piano during the Senior Citizens Valentines Day breakfast at the Ossining Community Center, Antonecchia couldnt help but shed a few tears.
She knocked me off of my feet shes so good, Antonecchia said. I have to admit she brought tears to my eyes, she was so fantastic.
Nunzio Antonecchia and his wife, Ann, of 65 years, were two of more than a hundred seniors attending the 18th annual breakfast Tuesday morning. The breakfast is put on each year by the Ossining Unified School Districts Cultural Arts Department and the Ossining High School National Honor Society. The breakfast included several area speakers and musical performances from Ossining students.
After hearing Antonecchias response to her music, Alice Burla said she was touched.
Thats so sweet, Burla said, who also helped cater the event as a member of NHS. I literally wanted to cry because I think theyre so cute and sweet. I just feel like I want to give them all a hug. It makes my day to do something for them and to see them smile.
Ossining resident Anthony Ciancio, 81, said he and his wife, Maria, have made sure to attend the breakfast each year. He said its always a special event for the two, who have been married for 55 years.
We came to the original one and it was so fantastic and all of the children at the schools were so great that we had to come back, Ciancio said. Its really nice that the schools do something nice for the seniors and it gives us a chance to meet other people and get to know the kids.
Ciancio also shared advice for couples on Valentines Day.
Always get something, a nice little present, Ciancio said. I love to do special things for my wife because shes beautiful and I want her to know that.
Antonecchia also shared a piece of advice.
Always say yes and never say no, he said with a laugh, while Ann shook her head.
Ann said she wanted to remind people in relationships to always laugh and to remember to not get too angry.
I have to deal with him so I know, Ann said, pointing to Nunzio. Its not always easy but you have to take it a day at a time and always take the good with the bad. Thats the key.
