NORWALK, Conn. The success of a recent show at Norwalks Concert Hall seems to have paid off in more ways than one, says one of its organizers.
More than 840 people attended An Acoustic Evening with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin, the first show offered by M.T. Heads at the venue, said Catherine Hausman, communications director of M.T. Heads. That netted more than $1,000 for Norwalks Open Door Shelter and encouraged organizers in their quest to make Fairfield County an entertainment destination.
The money collected for the shelter will feed more than 1,000 people for one day, said Bill Okwuosa, Open Doors executive director. It was raised with $1-per-ticket donations and through donations from concertgoers at the April 27 show. Founded by Kiwanis in the 1980s, Open Door receives 80 percent of its funding from foundations, donations and grants.
More than 100 of the concertgoers traveled from as far away as Canada, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, Hausmann said. We got some lovely comments afterwards about bringing more shows to Norwalk, and people even suggested bands theyd like to see, she added. The mayor introduced Mary Chapin and Shawn. I think we made Norwalk proud.
Myles Marek and Tyler Grill, founders of M.T. Heads, plan to bring more world-class talent to the hall. Hausman said, Its important to match the right artist to the room, and the tour manager has to plan the stops, so it takes a while to book dates, but we will certainly have some big names in there by the fall.
