At 4:54 a.m., firefighters responded to Cedarbrook Avenue and found an unresponsive man upstairs, Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera and South Plainfield Police Chief Peter Papa said. The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Two other adult residents escaped with minor injuries while three first responders sustained minor injuries battling the blaze, authorities said.
The cause of death remains undetermined pending the completion of an autopsy by the Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, authorities said.
The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature, though it remains under investigation, firefighters said.
