STAMFORD, Conn. An off-duty Darien police officer helped foil an attempted shoplifting Tuesday afternoon at the Stop & Shop on Bedford Street in Stamford, Sgt. Rob Barbagallo of Stamford Police said.
The officer saw three men leaving the store with four carts filled with [unpaid for and] unbagged groceries, Barbagallo said. The officer alerted store personnel and chased the suspects, stopping one, Dwayne Brown, 39, of Bridgeport, as he loaded items into a vehicle, Barbagallo said.
The manager went outside and attempted to detain a second man, Wesley McClain,42, but the suspect wrestled away from him, Barbagallo said. Police were able to find McClain and the third suspect, William Mayo, 50, of Bridgeport, a short time after, he said. McClains listed his address as homeless, Barbagallo said.
The value of the groceries was estimated at $1,600, he said.
The three suspects were all charged with fourth-degree larceny, third-degree robbery, third-degree assault and conspiracy for each of the offenses, police said.
Barbagallo would not release the name of the Darien officer.
