Notre Dame Nipped by Kolbe

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Kolbe Cathedral sophomore Maurice Hill hit two free throws with 4.1 seconds left Monday night to lift the Cougars to a 52-51 win over Notre-Dame of Fairfield in a boys basketball game at Sacred Heart University. The Lancers fell to 2-1.

Arkel Miles scored 18 points to lead the Lancers, while Norwalk’s Tre McPherson and Dan Upchurch had 10 apiece. Ian Gardener scored 12 for Kolbe (2-0).

The Lancers built a big lead early, taking a 25-9 advantage in the second quarter. Kolbe used a 13-0 run to get back into the game. Notre Dame, which led the entire game until Hill’s free throws, was up 39-34 after three quarters and led 49-44 with two minutes remaining before Kolbe rallied. Notre Dame missed two free throws with 13 seconds left before Hill was fouled on a drive to the basket.

Notre Dame visits New Milford on Thursday, and plays in the Fairfield Prep Christmas tournament next week at Fairfield University.
