NORWALK, Conn. A traffic disruption Tuesday in South Norwalk was part of a $4 million federally funded project to upgrade Norwalk's traffic lights, Department of Public Works Director Hal Alvord said. Workers from Ducci Electric were replacing the lights at Washington Street and Main Street in the beginning stages of an 18-month project. Norwalk police directed drivers through the intersection because normal traffic lanes were dug up.
Workers will design standard components for all of the city's 86 traffic signals. They will replace 15 of them "in the urban core of the city," Alvord said.
The work began a month ago. The city will apply for other grants to replace all of its traffic signals.
