Norwalk homeowners facing the loss of their homes because of foreclosure have a new avenue for help: Connecticut has been awarded $33 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Emergency Homeowners' Loan Program. The forgivable loan program is intended to assist homeowners facing foreclosure because of unemployment, underemployment or medical reasons.
Norwalk area housing counseling agencies are accepting applications for new federal aid, according to Mayor Richard Moccia, who urged homeowners in jeopardy of foreclosure to contact area housing counseling agencies to see whether they qualify for help through the program.
Applications for this program are being accepted by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority and their CHFA-HUD approved Counseling Agencies, which provide services for free to homeowners who are delinquent or in danger of becoming delinquent on their mortgages. Connecticut is one of five states approved to administer the Emergency Homeowner Loan Program.
Approved counseling agencies are Urban League of Southern Connecticut and the Housing Development Fund, both located in Stamford.
There is also a regional Housing Fair on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the City Hall Annex, 999 Broad St., Bridgeport. The housing fair, which allows for face-to-face inquiries about the program, are free and open to any state homeowner.
Norwalk and other area homeowners interested in the program have several ways to access information contact any CHFA-HUD approved counseling agency, visit CHFA's website or contact CHFA's Customer Call Center at 1-877-571-CHFA (2432), open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
