NORWALK, Conn. Jonathan Yates has been appointed as the new music director and conductor of the Norwalk Symphony. The Norwalk Symphony Society conducted a three-month nationwide search to select Yates to lead the symphony into its 72nd year. Yates joined the Norwalk Youth Symphony in 2010 as conductor of the Principal Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.
"I have been privileged to meet and speak to many talented professional men and women during this search," Emil Albanese, president of the symphony, said in a statement. "It was a very difficult decision because of the level of talent the position with NSO attracted. I felt we were very lucky to be able to attract Mr. Yates."
"The Board of Governors has undertaken a comprehensive challenge to bring a superb talent to lead the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra toward a sustained level of quality and involvement," Mayor Richard Moccia said in the statement. "The symphony maintains a level of excellence that is admired throughout the region, and I am happy to welcome Jonathan Yates to lead the work as our symphony begins a new season."
Albanese added, "I felt he at this time is best positioned to lead the NSO in a vertical way that will connect with our loyal base of fans and open the door to many new ones."
