Norwalk Students Display Artistic Talent

If you want to see what Norwalk’s kids have been up to in art class, come to the Annual City-Wide Art Show in City Hall. It’s impressive. Nathan Hale Middle School seventh-grader Nicholas Roldan-Vasco stood beside his painting "Ode to Picasso" Tuesday evening. His real masterpiece, though, was selected to hang in the permanent collection of the World Awareness Children’s Museum in Glens Falls, N.Y. The painting of boy and girl dancers celebrates his Colombian heritage.

"I've always loved to draw. Art is my favorite class," Nicholas said. "Half the time I draw from my own mind, the other half I copy other paintings so I can learn. I especially like to paint portraits."

Nathan Hale art teacher Debra Richello submitted 35 works for the museum's International Youth Art Exchange, a program that fosters cross-cultural understanding through art. Artwork by 11 of her students will travel to museums around the world. Two works, one by Nicholas and the other by Nicole Corral, were chosen for the permanent collection.

Over 200 works of art by students from all of the city's schools were hung in the Community Room for parents and community members to admire. (See the slideshow for a sampling of the artwork and artists.) Superintendent Susan Marks will choose 12 works for permanent display in the Ralph E. Sloan collection in City Hall. The Norwalk Housing Authority will pick 12 for its 2012 calendar. The show is on display through Friday.
