NORWALK, Conn. The Sonics U-13 Girls travel soccer team of the Norwalk Junior Soccer Association opened the season Sunday with a 2-0 win over Fairfield Storm.
The Sonics offense looked strong from the start, with forwards Lindsay McEwan and Amanda Barker quickly pressuring the Fairfield defense. The midfield of Melissa Guzman, Caroline Abrams, Nazae Craw and Evelyn Morris played a good possession game, keeping the ball in the Fairfield half. Craw took a great corner and quickly followed her shot to put one in the back of the net for the first goal of the season. Fairfield's counterattacks, were met by solid defense from center backs Kathleen McElaney and Samantha Ruess.
In the second half, the Sonics kept up the pressure and shortly after a substitution, Marielena Guerra scored on an uncleared ball. New keeper Danielle Bonis was rock-solid in goal and got the shutout with help from defenders Olivia Lipson, Anne Caldwell, Elvira Kariosis, Leah Zezima and Marissa Cundari.
