Norwalk Softball Drops Third Straight to Darien

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s softball team brought a nine-game winning streak into the week after beating Trumbull on April 27. Saturday, the Bears lost their third straight, 2-1, to a powerful Darien squad that has now won nine straight of its own.

“I thought this was our best game,’’ coach Elaine Gratrix said. “We just have to do one or two things a little bit better.”

Norwalk outhit Darien, 6-5, and both runs off of Patti Sciglimpaglia were unearned. Norwalk left seven runners on base, and except for one key error, played well in the field. “We made some miscues that we need to get better at,’’ Gratrix said.

Darien scored both of its runs in the second. After a single by Darien’s Courtney Bell, Emma Hamilton reached on a one-out error. Julia Domiziano reached on an infield single, and Sciglimpaglia got Britt Osborne on a fielder’s choice, erasing Bell at home. Then Ali Aparicio lofted a two-out single down the right field line, and two runs scored on the perfectly placed hit.

Norwalk got one back in the third when Eleni Petridis laced an RBI single to score Tori Dugan, who had two hits. Norwalk also left the bases loaded in the second inning, and Kerry McCabe (two hits) was stranded after ripping a leadoff double in the fourth.

Sciglimpaglia struck out two, walked two and hit one batter.

The Bears (10-4 overall, 10-3 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) also lost to New Canaan and St. Joseph this week, scoring just one run in each game. On Monday, Norwalk faces a solid Stamford team that has won three straight and is looking to secure a league playoff berth. Darien is 12-1 in the league and 12-2 overall.

“We could’ve hung our heads after the loss on Monday,’’ Gratrix said. “We didn’t. There were a lot of positives to take out of this. Patti pitched great. She was the backbone of our team today, and she kept us in it mentally and physically.”
