NORWALK, Conn. Yuri Kolomiets of the Norwalk River Rowing Association has his own holiday wish list this year. Hes hoping the community can help him fulfill it
Kolomiets, the head coach of the competitive rowing programs at Norwalk River Rowing, is seeking community support to help find an indoor training facility for his team. The rowers also need new racing shells for the upcoming spring season.
Our programs have grown over the past year, said Kolomiets, who took over as the teams coach last fall.
The rowers have been preparing for the spring season at the Norwalk Senior Center. Kolomiets says they can continue there, but hed like a larger facility. To accommodate all of team members, we really need a larger place, Kolomiets said.
The club also needs new shells because its existing fleet has become outdated. Several clubs and colleges have permitted Norwalk River Rowing to use their shells for races. Kolomiets is concerned his rowers wont have those boats available in the spring. The difference in shells is considerable.
Weve monitored times for our teams using different boats and the difference is incredible, Kolomiets said. We really need better equipment if we want to have the chance to win.
Kolomiets plans to take rowers to a competition in Florida in February. While the rowing season is still a couple of months away, the foundation for success is laid in the winter months, he said.
We think we will have some pretty good teams this spring, Kolomiets said.
