NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Riptide 16-and-under softball team finished third last weekend at the XGAMES ASA softball tournament in Stratford.
The Riptide reached the semifinals with a 4-0 win over the Stamford Starz in the quarterfinals. Amy Hurd got the victory, tossing a three-hitter with six strikeouts. Katelyn Spielman had two hits and scored twice for the Riptide.
In the semifinals, Norwalk took a 3-0 lead against the second-seeded Xtreme Chaos. But Xtreme rallied for two runs in the third and four in the fifth to win, 6-3.
Norwalk went 2-1 in pool play Saturday, losing to top-seeded Jennie Finchs Aces of New Jersey, 5-0, before rebounding to defeat Team CT, 12-2, and the New England Diamond Gems, 8-4. Unlike many of the other teams, the Riptide players are all from Norwalk. Most of the opposing teams select players from multiple communities.
Leading the way over the weekend for the Riptide were Hurd, Mallory Rochefort and Tori Dugan, who had seven hits apiece. Becky Stefanatos and Allison Hall each had five hits.
The Riptide play at Norwalk High School on Wednesday and Thursday for games against the Fairfield Fury and Fairfield Light. It will play in a tournament this weekend in Sterling, Mass.
