NORWALK, Conn. School supporters will rally a second time at Norwalk City Hall on Tuesday to urge politicians to lessen the spending cuts needed in the Norwalk's schools operating budget for next year.
About 200 people marched on City Hall on Thursday before a Common Council Finance Committee meeting on the school district's $4 million budget deficit. A Democratic proposal to give the Board of Education four years to repay the money failed when Republicans voted not to send it back to the full council. The situation faced by the Board of Education has not changed: It must make $7.7 million in cuts in the 2012-13 operating budget by June 30.
Tuesday's rally will take place at City Hall from 6 to 7:45 p.m. The Board of Education meeting will be at 7:45 inside City Hall.
Many teachers are expected to be laid off if the plan drafted by Superintendent Susan Marks is enacted. Jack Chiaramonte, chairman of the Board of Education, is among those pressuring the Norwalk Federation of Teachers to take a pay freeze to lessen the cuts, but the teachers are not behind the rally.
Rally organizer Barbara Smyth encouraged protesters to bring signs that are "respectful and to the point," she said in an email.
