NORWALK, Conn. Three men moved up the ranks of the Norwalk Police Department this week, while others were recognized for their service in the past month.
The promotions were the result of Lt. Michael Paul's retirement last month, Chief Thomas Kulhawik said. Sgt. Marc Lepore is now Lt. Marc Lepore. Jason Scanlon was promoted from detective to sergeant. Officer Daniel Serio is now a detective.
Officers Julio Rodriguez and Steven Luciano were named July Officers of the Month for arresting a Bridgeport man who ran from them after being spotted in a School Street housing project.
Lt. Susan Zecca happened to be in front of police headquarters on Aug. 6 to see a pit bull attacking a 60-year-old man on Hanford Place, Kulhawik said. She ran over to assist. Officer Kevin Shoenthal was in the headquarters lobby when a man ran and yelled about the attack. He went to assist.
The dog was shot with a stun gun 10 to 12 times, Kulhawik said. Zecca and Shoenthal were awarded Meritorious Commendation Certificates for their effort to stop the attack.
Kulhawik had other news: Officer Ed Schwartz, who retired last month, has accepted a part-time job with the city. He will be the new ordinance enforcement officer. That means he will try to keep sidewalks clear of snow this winter, and see that people have their trash cleaned up.
