How did Norwalkers handle May 21, 2011, the day when the earth was to go Ka-BOOM at least according to Harold Camping and the Rapture movement? Did they make any end-of-the-world resolutions? Were doomsday dinners on the agenda? Were Norwalkers planning to eat and drink like there was no tomorrow? How do New Englanders cope with these West Coast predictions?
Dorothy Garfield of County Street said she was just going to stay home and have pot roast. I am not selling my home or anything like that. I am cooking and grocery shopping for this day and beyond. Im going to go put a roast in the oven. What are the Rapture people going to say when the world doesnt come to an end? Oh, just a mistake in the forecast?
Alexis Heydt of Strawberry Hill said, I know theres going to be a future. Im going to go and buy a motorcycle. Her friend, Cathy Paukner of Easton also said she was a non-believer of the Rapture theory. Both were working at the P.A.W.S. tag sale to help ensure pets had a future, too.
Nearby at Rings End, Alvaro Radesea said there wasnt any increase in the number of shoppers because of the doomsday forecast. But John, his co-worker behind the counter, reminded him that they still had about five more hours to go. Alvaro did not seem worried.
Sara Del Vecchio, a design consultant, said in preparation for the end of the world, she was indulging in some expensive sushi for lunch. Just in case.
Jill Brody, a faux art painter, said, For doomsday, I am going to do yan yoga, eat chocolate cake--lots and lots of it--and then open a bottle of bubbly, for no apparent reason. Would others find intoxicating solutions to this dire prediction?
Ty Nicholson, Beverage Specialist at Bev Max didnt think so. This is the typical number of customers on a typical Saturday. Not one single customer mentioned it. I think our clientele thinks its a complete farce. If theres a sudden increase in our business today, its because its a gorgeous summer day. Thats the sort of thing that generates a lot of business for us.
Bernadette Coleman of Boston, and her best friend of thirty years, Breege OReilly, of Norwalk, werent supporters of the doomsday theory either. Said Bernadette flatly, It wont happen and certainly not before Oprahs last show on the 25th. Everyone knows that!
Of course! The end of the world couldnt possibly happen before Oprah gets to bid us all farewell.
