Norwalk Museum Hosts a Preemies Reunion

NORWALK, Conn. -- Ten years ago, Norwalk mom Paula Trujillo had triplets – 28 weeks into her pregnancy. The babies spent three months in the Jeffrey Peter Bauer Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Norwalk Hospital.

Recently, the family was reunited with the triplets' caregivers at an NICU Reunion held at Stepping Stones Museum for Children. Dr. Vicki Smetak, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, and Dr. Meltem Seli, director of neonatology, were all smiles as they welcomed more than 80 former patients, according to a press release.

"Without a doubt, this is my favorite day of the year and the best part of my job," Smetak said in her welcoming remarks, according to the release. "Spending time in the NICU with a premature or very sick baby is a very stressful experience for families. Tonight is a wonderful break from the intensity, allowing us to reflect and celebrate each child's progress."

The celebration, which drew more than 250 guests, allowed families and friends to reconnect with the hospital's neonatologists, nurses and staff. Children explored the newly expanded museum and exhibits and enjoyed dinner and ice cream. Family photos were taken and framed as mementos of celebrate the healthy growth and development of their little ones.

"Without the NICU, my children would not be here," Trujillo said, "and for that I am most grateful."
