NORWALK, Conn. A Norwalk man tried to escape blame for an accident by reporting his car stolen, Norwalk Police say.
The head-on collision at 8:49 p.m. on May 10 was caused by a vehicle that ran a stop sign at Suncrest Road as it went north on Scribner Avenue, Sgt. James Boff said. One of the drivers complained of severe neck and back pain, but two men in the other vehicle ran off before police arrived. Police used a canine officer to track their scent to a house nearby, but did not apprehend the suspects. They found a small amount of marijuana in the car.
The owner of the vehicle called later to report it stolen, Boff said. Detectives investigated and arrested George Beverly, 49, of 2 Gray Rock Road on a warrant Thursday evening. He was charged with evading responsibility, no insurance and falsely reporting a motor vehicle as stolen. Bond was $5,000.
