Norwalk Fireworks Set To Go

NORWALK, Conn. — Yes, raindrops have fallen but Norwalk's fireworks are set to blast off Sunday night, according to two local politicians. Town Clerk Andy Garfunkel and state Sen. Bob Duff both made announcements on Facebook that the fireworks are still on, "as of right now," Duff said at about 1 p.m.

"Only nature's own fireworks from the clouds can postpone it now," Garfunkel said at 2 p.m.

The Weather Channel estimates 0.18 inches of rain have fallen in the past 24 hours. Predictions calls for isolated thunderstorms Sunday night, with a 30 percent chance of rain. The weather map predicts the clouds will clear out by 7:30 p.m. (UPDATE 6 p.m.: The map now predicts that clouds will clear at 9 p.m., after a heavier rainstorm. There are no clouds coming after the 9 p.m. clearing.)

The cancellation number at Parks and Rec is 203-854-7938. If you call it now, you'll get a recording from June 24, no mention of fireworks.

If you want to see Garfunkel in a different light, you might head to Mill Hill Historic Park on Monday afternoon, where he will portray Revolutionary War Town Clerk Samuel Grumman as he greets visitors to the Town House, which dates to 1835. Norwalk Historic Commission Chairman Pete Bondi will also be there, talking about his collection of Revolutionary War artifacts.

The Weather Channel predicts isolated thunderstorms Monday as well, with a 30 percent chance of rain and a high temperature of 86 degrees.

And if you have any doubts about the city's weather forecasting abilities, let's remember that the Memorial Day parade went on as scheduled in spite of the rain showers that began the morning. Marchers suffered through sweaty sunshine with nary a rain drop in sight.

May the good luck continue.
