NORWALK, Conn. -- A recap of recent games in the Norwalk Cal Ripken Baseball League:
Terzian Trucking 10, Schwartz Law 5: Andrew Matthews capped a six-run first with a two-run homer, the fifth of five consecutive hits to open the game. Matthews added a double and a single in his 3-for-3 game and totaled two runs scored and three RBI. Jordan OBrien also was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and two RBI and Mike Claps was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Chris Druin, who also scored two runs, and Mike DiIorio had RBI singles in the first -- DiIorio hit two other laser shots to left and center that were caught - and Jason Thornly singled home the sixth and final run of the first-inning rally. Jack Torrealba also walked, singled and scored a run. Matthews also led the Terzian pitching effort with three innings of solid work (five strikeouts), and was relieved by Druin (1 2/3, four strikeouts) and Claps (1 1/3, two strikeouts). Schwartz Law took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single by Jack Feinstein scoring Matt St. Louis, and Mike Macari had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Max Schwartz had one hit and had another taken away on a slick play by Druin at first base in the second. Billy Neschis ran the bases aggressively and scored two runs.
Spezzano shines: 11-year old Kyle Spezzano, the only player that age to pitch for Terzian this year, threw two innings of scoreless relief Saturday at Saxe Field in New Canaan against New Canaan Cal Ripken's first place team, the Orioles. Terzian trailed 5-0 after three, but rallied for two runs in the top of fourth. Spezzano retired all six batters he faced to give his team a chance to come back, and they almost did as a sixth-inning rally (started by another Matthews homer) brought them to 5-3 and Spezzano's single kept the rally going. The game ended at 5-3.
TPT Engravers 9 , The Batters Box 8: TPT rallied from an 8-7 deficit in the bottom of the sixth with two runs for a walk-off win. Chris van der Els led off the inning with a walk and after stealing second and advancing to third on an out, he pulled off a rare steal of home with two outs. Ronnie Visiglia promptly ripped a double to left and scored the winning run on Cory Acevedos single. Acevedo had three hits in the game and another RBI in the first, and Visiglia also singled in the first to give him two hits for the game. Kyle Woodring singled in a big run in the fourth again scoring van der Els (who had three runs scored). Danny Roubiilards perfect bunt in the fifth led to a big run and a 7-5 lead after five innings. The Batters Box roared back with three runs in the top of the sixth with the biggest hits coming from Derek Engel, Matt Clarke, Brendan Huertes and Pete Neglia. A second run nearly scored on the big hit by Engel, but the runner was called out at home. Huertes also figured big in the first with a key hit along with hits by Griffin Root and Clayton Bray for an early 2-0 lead.
After Saturdays games, Terzian Trucking leads with a 5-4-1 record, followed by the Batters Box at 5-5, Schwartz Law at 3-6-1 and TPT Engravers at 3-7. Norwalk Cal Ripken records include games against New Canaan Cal Ripkens 4-team majors division.
