Three local fire departments traveled to 33 Reservoir Road, North White Plains, Tuesday morning to extinguish a chimney fire.
Trucks from the North White Plains, West Harrison and Valhalla Fire Departments were at the house with fire fighters on the roof where they sprayed water into the chimney to extinguish the fire.
Previously, the fire fighters had entered the house to check the fireplace, but were unable to extinguish it. They also tried to smother the fire, but it didn't work, according to North White Plains assistant chief Albert Conte, so fire fighters climbed the roof to spray water inside the chimney to extinguish the fire.
The house was vacant when the fire fighters arrived. A couple that bought the house last week had been inside trying the fireplace when the fire started.
"We put some wood in the fire and there was debris in the chimney that was burning," Manijeh Jahedi said.
