North Stamford got off to a strong start in the Section 11-year-old tournament Thursday night with a 6-2 victory over Edgewood of Bristol at Scalzi Park. North Stamford plays Fairfield American in the second game of round-robin play Friday at McGuane Park in Darien at 5:45 p.m.
Grant Purpura pitched three innings for North Stamford before Grant Stone came on in the fourth and finished up. North Stamford scored a run in the first, only to have Edgewood tie it at 1-1. North Stamford added two more in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth.
The tournament continues through next Wednesday. The top two teams will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Scalzi Park in the Section 1 championship game.
