ARMONK, N.Y. If youve found an oops sticker on an electronic device that you tried to dispose of by leaving it on the curb for pickup, youve violated the New York E-Waste recycling law that prohibits waste vehicles from picking up electronics at curbsides.
Theres now an easy alternative for disposing of electronics waste as the Town of North Castle has installed two bins in back of Town Hall where residents can dispose of electronics and scrap metal on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
March 3 was the first day the bins were in use and 20 cars came through with materials, according to April Paresi, co-chair of the North Castle Recycling Committee who oversees the program that was introduced by Town Board member Diane DiDonato-Roth.
"It was a good turnout because the Suburban Carting Company had just started to apply the oops stickers two days before," she said. The company picks up residential waste in North Castle.
The new bins enable residents to follow the new state law and dispose of waste more frequently than using Zero Waste Days, the town event that is held only twice a year, with the next one scheduled for April 21.
The North Castle Town Board approved the new bins at its last meeting on Feb. 29 and authorized $150 a month, which will pay for a Suburban Carting employee to oversee the operation. The town can recoup the money by selling the scrap metal it receives to Brookfield Resources, a recycling service, DiDonato-Roth said.
