CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- Although the epicenter of the earthquake was in Virginia, some residents in the Chappaqua area said they felt the rumblings of the reported 5.9 magnitude quake around 2 p.m.
Yeah, I felt it, said Ziggy Kucharcyzk, a Conte Construction worker. I felt the ground shake. It felt like I was working up on the bridge when the cars are going by, vibrating under my feet, you know? I was working down here though (under the bridge). It was freaky.
Andrea McElroy and her two sons, Michael and Ryan were at the doctors office when they felt the floor tremble.
We were in the eye doctor and we felt the ground shake, McElroy said. It was really weird. I wasnt sure what it was at first. Luckily, we were just in the waiting room.
Local residents responded on The Daily Chappaquas Facebook as well. Mark R. LePage commented, Didnt feel a thing.
Kelle Gildea added, Didn't feel a thing either ... And the stories keep getting bigger than an earthquake.
There were no visible signs of damage in Chappaqua or throughout New Castle. The New Castle Police Department answered a flurry of calls but none reported any damages or injuries.
Ned McCormack, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said the county believes there was no serious damage or injuries in the county. In White Plains, both the federal and county courthouses were briefly evacuated, but doors reopened around 3 p.m. The MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) said that the rails are operating on schedule.
