NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Kathleen Cronin and the rest of the New Rochelle library staff has been busy preparing for the annual summer reading program.
The theme for this years event is Animal Playgrounds and includes depictions of the sea, jungle and forest, which are displayed throughout the librarys childrens room. While children can easily slip in reading when school is in session, the program keeps them grounded during the summer and ready for the next school year.It keeps reading skills up for the summer because we want it to be fun, said Cronin, the head of childrens services. Its the game part of it.Children can select one paper animal of their choice for one of the room's window after they have completed three age-appropriate books. This is a reading incentive program, Cronin said. The program has always been popular and this year 225 participants from pre-school age through the fifth grade have signed up since Saturdays Summer Kick-off Party. Between nine and eight were very, very busy, Cronin said. By 12 p.m. were really busy. Those who read a minimum of three books are invited to end of summer awards parties at the library in August. How many books have you read so far this summer?
