NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Iona College students Nicholas Krzemineksi and Sean OShea have launched a new music application entitled iTrax after using knowledge they learned about applications for the iPhone and iPad.
iPhone/iPad applications development is a growing field and the skys the limit, said Krzemineksi.
The application the students created allows a listener to select songs and other music from their music library on their iPhone and play only their favorite parts. The user can also listen to the edited music before adding it to their iTrax library.
The application is the first product Krzemineksi and OShea and their business partners Majestyk Apps LLC developed under their newly-established app development company. Apple approved and accepted the application within a week after it was submitted for review.
The students credit their computer science masters program professor, Lubomir Ivanov, with giving them the tools they needed to create the music app. The entrepreneurs also praised the faculty in the computer science department for providing assistance with launching the application by connecting them with their technology business contacts.
"The vision and initiative of these students has clearly demonstrated the value of higher education as an incubator for tomorrows new ideas, said Ivanov in a statement. "Nick and Sean have applied the knowledge gained in the classroom to achieve commercial success."
While other colleges offer similar classes, Ivanov said he developed this course in response to student interest. Future offerings may include a course on the Android platform and other mobile applications, according to information from the college.
This has been a huge learning experience, thanks to the strong computer science professors at Iona, said OShea.
The application is available for download in the iTunes App Store and available for purchase on the Apple Store for 99 cents, according to the college.
iTrax currently has 450 subscribers, including users from nine different countries. The application averaged 10 downloads a day after it was introduced Jan. 7, which has since increased to 18.
Krzemineksi is in charge of the hard-coding back-end of the app. He will soon move from the development scene to overseeing sales. OShea deals with the web-based side of app and its images.
The students are also earning a bachelors of science degree that is recognized by the Computing Accreditation Commission of Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology or ABET in addition to their masters studies.
