All 10 of New Rochelle’s public schools will implement the YEARS project, which includes a sequence of STEM activities that incorporate NASA educational materials, the high school website announced. The program also focuses on areas of interest to NASA and uses the resources of Columbia University and the New York Hall of Science.
YEARS’ objective is to have students engaged in STEM enrichment activities from elementary school to high school. The program provides science teachers with professional development experiences and training to improve the engagement of students, the district said. It also provides students with a NASA-enriched curriculum during the school day and opportunities to continue STEM learning in NASA-inspired after-school and summer courses.
“Students at all grade levels will have the opportunity to engage in these activities,” the district website said. “Captivating student interest requires being relevant to students' lives and at the same time not have students feel threatened or turned off because they believe they cannot do science or mathematics.”
Students have also had the opportunity to use a portable planetarium, called a STARLAB. The inflatable astronomy laboratory allows students, parents and teachers to view the night sky, sit inside earth or journey to the interior of a cell with sky cylinders
