New Rochelle School District Tackles Issues

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The New Rochelle School District's Board of Education will look into whether a citizen budget committee could help the district craft the best possible budget for the next school year.

The board passed a resolution at its meeting Tuesday to investigate if and how the committee could be formed so that the most effective budget can be created based on input from city residents. Board members said they will spend the next week looking to see how a resolution can be written up so citizens can lend ideas before the budget is presented March 8.

Lianne Merchant, a school board member, said she felt a resolution was worth looking into.

“We need to look at the best ideas that we might have overlooked,” said Merchant.

The board next meets in a committee of the whole session March 6 at William B. Ward Elementary School. The governing body holds its regular meeting at 8 p.m. The next budget review session is held March 8 at 7 p.m. in the New Rochelle High School library.

The board also discussed a number of other items at its meeting, including plans to allow members of the New Rochelle School community easier access around work during the North Avenue Utility Relocation Project.

“We’re trying to work with the city to plan alternate routes, we might want to try later,” said Schools Superintendent Richard Organisciak.
