NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., - Recent New Rochelle High School graduate Ricardo Medina became a part of the city's "Potential Candidates" Summer Internship Program in order to gain work experience.
The recent New Rochelle High School graduate also benefited from the experience of teaching children proper ways to behave in society when supervising participants of the city's summer drop-in program at Albert Leonard Middle School.
"It really taught me how to interact with the kids and teach them how to act," said Medina.
Medina was not only an asset to children of the program, but also to himself and other fellow co-workers.
"It was really good," he said. "It opened my eyes to hard work."
Medina also learned proper work ettiquette, such as coming on time. "Work is hard and is not as easy as you might think," he said.
Medina and 69 other youths were recognized at the New Rochelle Youth Bureau's annual Youth Employment Recognition Ceremony in council chambers Wednesday.
A contribution was also given by Allstate Insurance Company Exclusive Agent Nelson Puello to Youth Bureau Deputy Chief Kelly Johnson in the amount of $1,000 for the Bureau. Light refreshments followed in the city hall second-floor rotunda.
"This ceremony recognizes the accomplishments of our youth employees before their families and our work site partners, and lets them know how valued they are by us," said Johnson. "Through the efforts and support of our board, the City Manager's Office and Department of Development, we were able to maintain our employment program during a very difficult economic time."
Other youths honored, were a part of the Network Youth Leadership Program, the TANF Summer Employment Program working at different places throughout the city.
The program was made possible by the City of New Rochelle and many other county and city organizations, and programs, including $7,000 raised by the Youth Bureau's Board of Commissioners.
